The Different Types of Cannabis
Not sure what types of cannabis products you want to buy? We encourage you to focus on your goals. What effects would you like to feel or avoid? What smells and flavors do you prefer? Products are typically categorized by sativa, indica, and hybrids.
- Sativas are known for their invigorating, energizing, and cerebral high and are often used to treat stress and elevate focus.
- Indicas are associated with full-body effects or “couch-lock” and are often used for relaxation and to treat insomnia.
- Hybrids are a combination of the two and can be sativa-dominant, indica-dominant, or a balanced partnership.
Along with considering strains, it’s necessary to consider potency. Naturally occurring chemical compounds called cannabinoids are responsible for producing the effects of cannabis consumption. The two most well-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
- THC is the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” sensations associated with cannabis.
- CBD is non-euphoric but demonstrates potential therapeutic properties, such as reducing pain, inflammation, and nausea.
- Bisabolol – Hints of tea tree oil and chamomile and used to treat inflammation
- Caryophyllene – Spicy and peppery and used to treat anxiety, depression, and ulcers
- Linalool – A flower terpene used for relaxation to elevate mood
- Myrcene – Earthy and herbal and targeted at insomnia and anxiety
- Ocimene – A combination of mango, parsley, and basil and used to ease congestion and combat viruses and bacteria
- Pinene – Strong pine aroma and potentially helpful for reducing pain, boosting memory, and offsetting the nausea and coordination issues associated with THC
- Terpinolene – Tends to smell like apples, conifers, and cumin and is believed to provide antibacterial, anti-fungal, and sedative properties
- Limonene – The bright citrus notes are believed to enhance mood and reduce stress
- Humulene – Earthy and woody and used to reduce inflammation
- Eucalyptol – Eucalyptus and tree oil and a refreshing option to treat inflammation and combat bacteria

Cannabinoids and terpenes provide insight into what to expect from the product. Terpenes are naturally occurring chemical compounds that are responsible for the smell and taste of the different strains of cannabis. It is believed that cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds found in cannabis interact with each other in what is known as the “entourage effect.”
